Types of masks

When it comes to asbestos removal, choosing the right mask is absolutely critical for safety. Only the highest level of particulate filtration like a P3 mask filter is acceptable for asbestos removal work.

When referring to asbestos respirator/filters the “P” stands for Particulates, and the number refers to the protection level.

For example:

  • P1: Lower efficiency (~80%)

  • P2:Medium efficiency (~94%)

  • P3: High efficiency (~99.95%)

Here is a breakdown of the main types of respirators used in asbestos work, along with their features and appropriate uses:

Half mask

These are suitable for lower-risk tasks and non-friable asbestos. They are lightweight, comfortable and you can combine the P3 filter with gas/vapor filters if needed. Half masks are easier to wear with prescription glasses; however, they do not protect eyes from airborne fibers.

Full face negative mask

These provide full facial protection, have a better seal and are suitable for longer or high-risk exposure.

Full face powered air-purifying respirators (PARP’s)

These are recommended for friable asbestos as the battery-powered fan draws air through the filters and the positive pressure helps prevent leaks. They are more expensive but comfortable for long durations, help keep the staff cool on those sizzling summer days and lower breathing resistance.
